Exploring Marrakesh
When you're not engaged in the exciting sessions and networking events, Marrakesh has a wealth of activities and experiences waiting for you. To make the most of your visit, here's an FAQ guide to help you explore this vibrant city during your free time.
1. What are the must-see attractions in the Medina?
The Medina, the historic heart of Marrakesh, is a must-visit area. You’ll find vibrant markets, historic monuments, and a rich cultural experience.
- Jemaa el-Fna Square: This lively square is the epicenter of activity in Marrakesh. You can experience street performances, acrobats, musicians, snake charmers, and bustling food stalls serving local delicacies.
- Marrakesh Souks: Wander through the narrow alleys of the souks to shop for traditional Moroccan goods, including spices, textiles, handcrafted jewelry, and leather items. It’s a perfect place for souvenirs.
2. Historical sites, Museums and Gardens
Marrakesh is home to several remarkable historical sites and outstanding museums that offer a glimpse into its rich history and culture. The city also offers several tranquil gardens where you can escape the bustling city streets.
- Palais de la Bahia: A stunning 19th-century palace showcasing intricate architecture, beautiful courtyards, and lush gardens. It’s a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city. For the Gala Dinner on Dec 9, the palace will be closed exclusively for Congress delegates.
- Saadian Tombs: These beautifully restored tombs date back to the 16th century and are the final resting place of members of the Saadian dynasty. The ornate tile work and architecture are impressive.
- Koutoubia Mosque: The largest mosque in Marrakesh and a defining landmark of the city, known for its towering minaret. Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, but the exterior is still worth a visit.
- Jardin Majorelle: A famous botanical garden created by artist Jacques Majorelle, later owned by Yves Saint Laurent. The vibrant blue buildings, exotic plants, and serene atmosphere make this garden a favorite spot for visitors.
- Jardin Menara: A historic garden with a large reflecting pool and olive groves. The views of the Atlas Mountains in the background add to its charm, making it a great place to relax and take in the scenery.
- Museum of Marrakech: Located in the Dar Menebhi Palace, this museum houses a diverse collection of Moroccan art, including traditional crafts, ceramics, and textiles. The architecture of the palace itself is worth the visit.
- Yves Saint Laurent Museum: Just next to Jardin Majorelle, this museum is dedicated to the life and work of the iconic fashion designer. It features his collections, sketches, and rotating exhibits on fashion and art.
3. Activities
Marrakesh is known for its culinary scene and lively nightlife. Some activites not-to-be-missed include:
- Street food at Jemaa el-Fna Square: Don’t miss the chance to try local street food such as tagines, couscous, and harira soup in Jemaa el-Fna.
- Rooftop Restaurants: Marrakesh has many rooftop terraces where you can enjoy a meal while overlooking the city and the Atlas Mountains. Try local favorites like Café des Épices or Nomad.
- Bars and Lounges: For a more modern experience, check out the trendy bars and lounges in the Gueliz and Hivernage areas, where you’ll find everything from chic rooftop bars to stylish cocktail lounges.
- Traditional Moroccan Hammam: While not food-related, a visit to a traditional hammam (steam bath) is an essential Moroccan experience. Combine it with a visit to a spa for a relaxing afternoon.
4. Getting around in Marrakesh?
- Walking: Many attractions, especially within the Medina, are easily accessible on foot.
- Taxis: Taxis are readily available and affordable. Just ensure to agree on a fare before starting your ride.
