Doug Bailey, Director of Program Development, Discovery Channel (USA)
As Director of Program Development for Discovery Channel, Bailey searches for and develops specials and series for the flagship network. He has held the position since March 2008. Since then, he has developed specials such as Killer Whales, Two Weeks in Hell, Finding Amelia, and Secret America; and series such as Surviving The Cut, Out of Egypt with Kara Cooney, and Is It True?
Prior to that, he was Director of Program Development for Science Channel where he conceived and developed the 2008-09 upfront slate.
Bailey spent his early Discovery career in program development for Military Channel, Science Channel, and Discovery Home Channel. There, he conceived and developed hit series such as Weaponology and Top Tens. In addition, he was a key member of the team who developed Flip That House, which went on to become a huge ratings success for TLC. Bailey was tapped to be the project manager for the launch of Discovery HD Theater in June 2002 and was critical to the success of the company’s migration to the new format.
He rejoined Discovery Communications in October of 1999. Previously, he had worked at the company in production and development for daytime programming on Discovery Channel and TLC in 1995-1996.
Prior to rejoining Discovery, Bailey was the White House producer for C-SPAN and began his career in local television news production in South Carolina.
Bailey received a Bachelor of Science in television-radio from Ithaca College in New York, and a Master of Arts in media management from Ohio University.
