Ralph Lee, Head of Specialist Factual, Channel 4 (UK)
Ralph Lee is the Head of Specialist Factual at Channel 4. His department commissions history, science, arts and religion programs, but subjects can also span across adventure, geography, economy, business, engineering and technology. From Inside Nature’s Giants to 1066: The Battle for Middle Earth, Specialist Factual has been at the heart of Channel 4’s mission to back creative, innovative and provocative programs. Recent commissions include: Alone In The Wild; Henry VIII: Mind of a Tyrant; The Operation: Surgery Live; The Great Sperm Race; Christianity: A History and The Scandalous Adventures of Lord Byron.
Ralph started his career as a freelance researcher before joining the BBC’s history unit where he began directing on history and arts programs. Leaving the BBC to freelance direct he made docs and biographies for Channel 4 including The Secret History of Hacking, The Real James Hunt and the RTS award-winning The Real John Curry. He joined C4 as history commissioner in 2002, becoming Deputy Head of Specialist Factual. In 2007 he joined Five as Head of Factual but returned to C4 in April 2008 to take up his present role.
